World Cup 2008

Move over, football.  Played internationally, soccer is one of the world's most popular competitive sports. Largely a European pasttime, soccer has become a favorite sport in the United States as well, and the social arrival of David Beckham certainly did nothing to quell the excitement. With millions of American football fans awaiting the NFL season, the rest of the world wagers on who will win this years’ World Cup.

All the teams are playing exceptionally well, and it seems the win could be wide open.  Even so, there are several favorites to win the World Cup this year. First and foremost it seems that Brazil, with its record five World Cup victories, is once again the team to beat.  After a rocky start in the team's early years, Brazil has risen to godlike status in the world of soccer. With their seemingly invincible rise to power, Brazil is a formidable force in this competitive sport.  This year, they're more driven than ever to win their unprecedented sixth World Cup.

There is some argument about who is the second favorite to win this year. Many bets are on Germany. Having the advantage of playing on home soil is always a giant boost, but can they bring home the trophy? After injuries and setbacks resulting from poor coaching, many say no. Still, they are a heavy favorite, with odds standing at 7 to 1 for a win over America alone.  Either way, this year’s event promises to be more exciting than ever, and certainly one for the books.
